In college, I read George Orwell’s gloomy and ominous novel 1984. While it was eye-opening, I never once considered that the totalitarian world it portrays could ever materialize in America.

Today, I’m not so sure it couldn’t.

We seem to be already moving toward the dystopian totalitarian state of “Oceania” that Orwell deftly describes in “1984.” While it may not be the same totalitarianism practiced in Russia, China, or North Korea, it is nevertheless a tyranny of the ruling party—currently, the Democrat Party.

Right now, elites in that party control the executive branch and the Senate as well as 90 percent of the mainstream news media, and their repression of political opponents is pervasive.

It may not be the violent, mind-numbing oppression that the miserable protagonist Winston Smith endures in Orwell’s classic novel, but there is little doubt that in America, we are already witnessing the subjugation and persecution of political enemies, the promotion of identity politics, groupthink, and cancel culture pushed by the president, the Senate, and both the legacy and social media.

Think about the vicious marginalization and banishment of those who disagree with Democrats today via “cancel culture.” Think about the shaming and expulsion of political opponents from the public square of social and legacy media. Think about the persecution and prosecution of so-called MAGA Republicans and their presumptive presidential candidate, Donald Trump. Or think about the inflicting of economic pain through the loss of jobs in the Biden administration’s inhibited and banned industries such as coal, oil, natural gas, fracking, pipelines, gasoline-powered automobiles, and trucks.

Look at the attack on the First Amendment and free speech that is occurring in America today, led by Big Tech, social media, the mainstream media, Joe Biden, and lawmakers in Congress who openly embrace globalism, socialism, and communism while disparaging capitalism, free markets, and the U.S. Constitution.

Look at the Biden administration’s use of government agencies to spy on and arrest Americans it considers terrorists, reactionaries, extremists, or insurrectionists. It’s alarming government overreach that looks suspiciously like Nazi Germany’s Geheime Staatspolizei, otherwise known as the Gestapo, or like Orwell’s “Thought Police” in “1984.”

Look at the indefatigable attempts to deny American history—or worse, to rewrite it, like the 1619 Project that dishonestly asserts slavery, not a quest for freedom, was the defining reality of American history. Look at Biden’s dismantling of President Trump’s 1776 Commission, which sought to restore honesty and a sense of patriotism to the teaching of American history to our children.

Look at how the dishonest Department of Education and the Biden administration are pushing Critical Race Theory in our schools and federal agencies—an ideology that understands the world by viewing everything (society, economics, sports, education, family, science) through the lens of “whiteness” and white racism. White people, according to CRT, drift in a kind of amniotic fluid of privilege and unearned gifts based on the brutal ideology of “white supremacy.” White children are taught that they are guilty and irredeemable because of their “whiteness,” “white privilege, and white fragility.”

President Trump ordered a halt to the implementation of CRT in federal agencies. However, on his first day in office, President Biden rescinded the Trump administration’s executive order that prohibited critical race theory training for federal agencies and contractors.

But let’s return to Orwell’s “1984.” The Ruling Party controls everything in Oceania, even the people’s history and language. The Party is implementing an invented language called “Newspeak,” a propagandistic language designed to limit free thought and promote the ruling Party’s doctrines.

Its words include “doublethink” (belief in contradictory ideas simultaneously), which is reflected in the Party’s slogans: “War is peace,” “Freedom is slavery,” and “Ignorance is strength.” The Party maintains control through its Thought Police and continual surveillance. Even thinking rebellious thoughts is illegal. Such thoughtcrime is, in fact, the worst of all crimes.

Sound familiar? How often has our pitiful president condemned 75 million Americans who voted for Donald Trump in 2020 and who support his election in 2024 as “MAGA extremists” who are a threat to democracy? Joe Biden and his Democrat minion’s warped definition of democracy is all about one-party rule. Republicans are a threat to our democracy and should be required to undergo “reeducation,” declares Hillary Clinton, and Democrat members of Congress blithely concur.

What kind of democracy is it that condemns half of the nation as insurrectionists and MAGA extremists and is intent on maintaining its hold on power at all costs—even if it means the end of our republic?

The answer is simple. That nation—the one Democrat elites want—is NOT a democracy. It is a one-party oligarchy of elite globalists who see the United States as a malevolent force in the world that must be governed by an enlightened minority—not by the great unwashed electorate who the elites believe are too stupid to govern themselves. Remember the “basket of deplorables?”

In Orwell’s 1984, the people of Oceania are governed by the all-controlling Party, which has brainwashed the population into unthinking obedience to its leader, “Big Brother.” This omniscient individual and his subordinates know what is best for the people of Oceania: one-party, authoritarian rule.

It is a lesson that Democrat party elites have learned and are intent on practicing in America. Just as in Oceania, they are practicing “doublethink” by telling us there is no inflation, no invasion at our southern border, no violent crime in our cities, and no problem with a senile, befuddled president in the White House.

Instead, we hear “inflation is economic growth,” “invasion at our southern border is controlled immigration,” “violent crimes in our cities are inconsequential misdemeanors,” and “a senile, befuddled president is fully alert and decisive.”

Perhaps a more glaring example of this kind of doublethink by Democrat elites was during the COVID pandemic when they simultaneously insisted that the pandemic made church services, funerals, and weddings too dangerous to allow while tacitly allowing massive protest marches, riots, and looting by leftist mobs of malicious acolytes.

In addition to doublethink, 1984’s “newspeak” has taken hold in the Biden administration. One of Biden’s torrents of executive orders mandates that phrases like “China virus” cannot be used by “federal agencies in their official materials and statements.” The order condemns “the use of such phrases that refer to the coronavirus through its location of origin because they contribute to xenophobia against the Asian American and Pacific Islander community.”

What hooey. Whitewash the truth so you don’t offend the nation that has been dispatching millions of dollars to the Biden crime family.

Never mind that today’s world knows that the COVID-19 virus originated in Wuhan, China. Whether in a laboratory or a bat cave makes little difference at this point—though most expert virologists today say the virus almost certainly escaped from a laboratory where gain of function research was underway.

The indisputable reality is that China covered up how extremely infectious the virus was and then allowed thousands of infected people to fly out of Wuhan to contaminate the rest of the world, causing the death of millions of innocent people. For that crime, China’s Communist Party and its malevolent leaders deserve the world’s everlasting condemnation.

Back to “1984.” Winston Smith works in the Ministry of Truth, where he alters historical records to fit the needs of the ruling Party.

Does that sound familiar? It should. Socialists and historical revisionists in the Biden administration are working overtime to amend American history—or at least our view of it.

Christopher Columbus was a racist thug who murdered the indigenous people he encountered in the New World. Therefore, Columbus Day should not be observed, and all statues honoring him should be ripped down. Thomas Jefferson, George Washington, and other founding fathers were slaveholders who, therefore, need not be honored for their work and sacrifices in creating the world’s most successful democratic republic. The Civil War was not fought to free enslaved people. It was fought to preserve the North’s industrial might and foster its economy. Therefore, Abraham Lincoln need not be glorified as the “great emancipator.” And on, and on, and on.

Essentially, the Biden revisionists are telling us that all the American history we learned in grade school, high school, and college is bunk. America’s history is one of deceit, avarice, racism, exploitation, and murder. America is a flawed nation, not an exceptional one.

Sorry, but I’m not buying that crap.

So, let’s return to “1984,” where Winston is troubled by the Ruling Party’s control of history: The party claims that Oceania has always been allied with Eastasia in a war against Eurasia, but Winston seems to recall when this was not true.

Truth in Orwell’s Oceania is relative and proportional to the needs of the state. Truth is something to be manipulated and employed to control the masses.

Think about Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas and his blatant lies to Congress in saying our southern border is closed and secure when a record 10 million migrants have entered the country illegally since Biden took control of the White House.

Americans should not believe their lying eyes, Biden and his socialist/communist comrades say. Instead, when it comes to illegal immigration, they should believe the lies the White House, a corrupt Homeland Security agency, and complicit Democrats in Congress are telling them. In the end, all of us will learn that by allowing some 10 million illegal aliens to invade America, Biden and the Democrats were doing nothing less than importing new Democrat voters to replace the ones who have fled the party since it metamorphosed into a socialist/communist clique.

Then, there is the very real possibility that thousands of those who invaded our country are here to do us harm. Perhaps they will blow up a crowded shopping mall filled with families some Sunday afternoon. Maybe they will contaminate the water supplies for a few cities or unleash a new pathogen that will kill thousands of people. Or perhaps they are setting up terrorist cells and biding their time until the Communist Party in China, the mullahs in Iran, Putin in Russia, or Kim in North Korea order them to attack us from within.

If any of these things happen, we can thank the Biden administration. Their selfish obsession with hanging on to power at ANY COST is setting us up for some horrendous and deadly catastrophes.

In the meantime, the Biden régime promotes and supports the mutilation of children’s genitalia in the name of transgenderism and gender dysphoria—both of which most reputable psychiatrists and mental health experts say are psychological disorders that most children eventually grow out of. It pushes the idiotic practice of allowing men who identify as women to compete against women athletes in sports, thereby overturning important protections for women under the 1972 Title IX Act.

So, children cannot smoke or drink or drive, but 13-year-old girls can decide without parental permission to have their breasts sliced off and confused prepubescent boys can opt to have their penises and testicles amputated. As if that is not grotesque enough, laws have been passed in some blue states that call for the imprisonment of parents if they attempt to prevent their children from making such irreversible, life-altering decisions.

America in 2024 is a perverted and warped nation that Orwell could not have imagined when “1984” was published in 1949. It seems devoid of common sense. At least in Oceania, there is no confusion about what a man or woman is or how many genders there are.

Not even an allegedly sensible Supreme Court justice could not or would not define what a woman is during her confirmation hearing, and every cogent and rational biologist or geneticist will tell you science recognizes only two (2) natural biological genders.

When it comes to common sense and settled science, we have moved through the looking glass and down the rabbit hole into an alternate reality. Thanks to mendacious media and a mumbling old fool in the White House, Democrat elites are dictating our behavior and telling us what we should believe, how we should rear our children, and for whom we are allowed to vote.

In many ways, it is even worse than the dystopian state Orwell created in “1984” because millions of naïve Americans seem willing to be led like lemmings to political and moral annihilation by a government ruled by corrupt and immoral elites.

In “1984,” pitiable Winston Smith symbolizes the values of civilized life, and his ultimate downfall is a harrowing reminder of the vulnerability of such values amid all-powerful states and the political organizations that control them.

Orwell depicts a state where daring to think differently is rewarded with imprisonment and torture, where people are monitored every minute of the day, and where ruling party propaganda eclipses free speech and independent thought. “1984” is a sobering reminder of the evils of unrestrained authoritarian governments.

The book looks increasingly like a catastrophic blueprint for a once exceptional and freedom-loving place called America. Instead, today, our nation is a land where political opponents are persecuted and jailed by the ruling elite, where parental rights are being eliminated, and where saying or doing the “incorrect” thing will get you canceled or worse.

Regrettably, America in 2024 is looking just as depraved and corrupt as Oceania in 1984.
